Biochemistry, sometimes called biological chemistry, is the study of chemical processes within and relating to, living organisms. By controlling information flow through biochemical signalling and the flow of chemical energy through metabolism, biochemical processes cause the complexity of life.
Medical biochemistry is the study of biochemical exchanges that occur within the human body in relation with their application in the field of medicine. Biochemistry today has made spectacular progress in unravelling the mysteries of animate nature. This progress has allowed us to gain deeper insight into the principles of vital activity and has to a very significant extent stimulated the development of applied disciplines especially medicine.
Over the last 40 years, biochemistry has become so successful at explaining living processes that now almost all areas of the life sciences from botany to medicine are engaged in biochemical research. Today, the main focus of pure biochemistry is in understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells, which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of whole organisms.
The aim of this book is to present a core of biochemical knowledge that is desirable for undergraduate and postgraduate students and also those involved in the field of medicine, microbiology, biotechnology and pharmaceutical.
