The cold-water upland fisheries can be defined as those occurring in waters with temperatures up to 21°C, the limit of the snow trout. Otherwise, they have been related to the temperature tolerance of introduced salmonids, i.e. 0-20°C. These fisheries are those dependent upon the typical fish communities of the Himalayan sector of the Basin.
The deep ocean (more than 1,000 m) has an enormous volume, comprising more than 88 percent of the world’s ocean. It contains many species of fish and invertebrates, some of which have large populations. Deep-sea fisheries in the high seas are those that take place at great depths and in waters beyond national jurisdiction (such as the exclusive economic zones [EEZs]). The great depths and distances from the coast at which marine living resources are caught by deep- sea fisheries in the high seas pose scientific and technical challenges, particularly in providing scientific support for management.
In the book the main deep-sea fisheries are reviewed in terms of areas, fleets and development over time. Target species are given but will be subject to a more biological analysis. The main aim of publishing this book is to provide and up-to-date information on different aspects of cold-water aquaculture and fisheries.
