A dairy is a business enterprise established for the harvesting, processing or both of animal milk – mostly from cows, buffaloes or goats, but also from sheep, horses, or camels – for human consumption. A dairy is typically located on a dedicated dairy farm or in a section of a multi- purpose farm (mixed farm) that is concerned with the harvesting of milk.
Livestock are domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities such as meat, milk, leather, and wool. The term is often used to refer solely to those raised for food, and sometimes only farmed ruminants, such as cattle and goats. The breeding, maintenance, and slaughter of these animals, known as animal husbandry, is a component of modern agriculture that has been practiced in many cultures since humanity’s transition to farming from hunter-gatherer lifestyles. Livestock production continues to play a major economic and cultural role in numerous rural communities.
Poultry farming refers to raising various types of domestic birds commercially for the purpose of meat, eggs and feather production. The most common and widely raised poultry birds are chicken. About 5k million chickens are being raised every year as a source of food (both meat and eggs of chicken). This book covers all of the above topics and sheds light on the current practices of the industry.
