Purification of product gas is very important for all applications with the exception of direct combustion after the gasifiers. In the case of direct combustion, product gas purification must compete with combustion exhaust gas purification. Gases are purified for the purpose of further using the gases them selves or the impurities contained in them; industrial gases discharged into the atmosphere are purified to prevent pollution of the air by noxious substances.
The problem of purification of industrial gases arose precisely because of rapid industrial development, the concentration of industries, and increased scales of production. In industrially developed countries, the saturation of areas with industries and transportation was such that local pollution of the atmosphere became universal and led to the pollution of the entire air basin, or at least a huge part of it.
Although various gas impurities such as H2S, CO2, SO2, NO can be separated using these unit operations, the removal of carbon dioxide from the mixtures of gases is an important industrial process in several contexts and will be discussed in detail in the present work.
The purpose of this book is to make available to engineers, plant managers, students, and technical men in general a description, under one cover, of the several purification and other processes that are applied to gas.
