Information science, as a science and as a profession, is defined by the problems it has addressed and the methods it has used for their solutions over time. Any advances in information science depend on whether the field is indeed progressing in relation to problems addressed and methods used. Research in library and information science is necessary for maintenance pace with all of the recent trends in the developing field of library study. Library and information science (LIS) is the merging of the two fields namely library and information science. The phrase “”library and information science”” is associated with schools of library and information science (abbreviated to “”SLIS””), which generally developed from professional training programs to university institutions during the second half of the 20th century.
Researchers have recently reviewed the status of some digital libraries from around the globe. These reviews reveal that while the digital libraries have very good information access and retrieval mechanisms in place, there is almost no provision for quality reference and information services. Some recent research efforts have been directed at building personalised digital library environments. These studies can be grouped into three categories: user needs assessment, personalised user interface and personalised digital library, researchers reviewed literature on user interfaces, particularly in a digital library environment, and suggested the need for a task-based digital library.
